Methods of protecting plywood from moisture

1. Using wood varnish

It is necessary to cover the plywood with wood varnish. The material needs to be prepared beforehand. Make sure the surface is dry and sand it parallel to the grain using fine-grit sandpaper. Then take a dry cloth and remove the dust. Only after these procedures can you start varnishing. You can use a roller, brush, or sprayer for this. Apply 2-3 coats of varnish to the plywood. Before starting varnishing, wear gloves and a respirator.

Polyurethane varnishes work well. After application, a film is created that protects the surface from moisture, scratches, mechanical damage, and impacts. At the same time, the color of the material does not change.

2. Using linseed oil

Coating plywood with linseed oil is the most common method because it is affordable. First, heat the linseed oil in a water bath to 60 °C. Use a brush to apply it in 4 layers. The edges of the plywood should also be covered with linseed oil. After the first layer is applied, the material needs to be dried using a construction hairdryer. It can also be dried with an iron heated to 200 °C. Simply run the iron over the plywood. Then apply the next layers.

3. Using epoxy resin

Epoxy resin provides excellent protection for plywood against moisture. After application, the surface hardens. Hardener is added to the epoxy resin, followed by acetone.

4. Using wax

To prepare such impregnation, you will need natural linseed oil, beeswax, and turpentine. First, heat the wax in a water bath, then mix it with linseed oil. Then add turpentine. The following proportions should be observed: 2 parts wax, 1 part linseed oil, and 1 part turpentine. Pour the mixture into a jar and let it cool.

Cover the surface of the plywood with this solution, heat it with a construction hairdryer, and polish it.

If you have done everything correctly and according to the technology, you now have waterproof plywood.
